A woman entered the grocery store at nine in the morning wearing a blue sequined hat. Nobody commented. The cashier asked about coupons. A child moved aside so she could reach the yogurt. This was more respectful than applause. Applause would have turned the hat into a performance and required an ending. Instead the hat bought groceries. It stood beneath fluorescent lights and compared two kinds of butter. I understood that confidence is not being noticed. Confidence is surviving the moment after everyone notices and continuing toward dairy.
