A friend begins every voice message with, "Sorry, this is stupid." I asked why. He said, "In case it is." The apology arrives before the thought, like a lawyer sent ahead of a child. We do this constantly now. We soften the sentence, lower the volume, and call the request small before anybody else can. Then somebody names a song please. One word. No defense around it. A request that has accepted the risk of being heard. Maybe directness feels intimate now because everyone else has hired security.
