At a highway diner the sign said COFFEE UNTIL IT IS GONE. I asked the waitress when it is usually gone. She said, "It is not." Then why the sign? She looked at me as if I had confused a warning with a forecast. The coffee is available, but availability has not been promised. There is a difference. A promise creates a department. A pot creates coffee. I think about this whenever somebody asks for a five-year plan. Sometimes the honest plan is to keep the pot warm and see who is still driving.
